High school is not the same journey for everyone — but traditional schools often treat it that way. Whether it’s due to impersonal classes, absent counseling, family challenges, or children of one’s own, not everyone reaches graduation the same way. Association House High School, a Youth Connections Charter School, offers a new path to graduation for 16 to 21-year-olds in Chicago who have been left behind by traditional public schools. As a Level 1+ school, our goal is to prepare successful, productive, and compassionate members of a diverse, competitive, and global society. Psychosocial Rehabilitation provides a structured, therapeutic program that offers group and individual services aimed at building social, economical, vocational, independent living skills, symptom management, and other skills. To eliminate the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes against marginalized individuals and communities, it is important that we continually assess ourselves and our practices and address our own implicit biases.

In-Person Youth Mental Health First Aid Training (11-16-
In partnership with nonprofit partners, we deliver our nationally recognized, values-driven, results-led apprenticeship to advance our mission to create a just and equitable society and the diverse leadership to sustain it. Our bilingual, culturally-affirming, trauma-informed case management programs support hundreds of individuals with mental health disorders in accessing resources and achieving independence and recovery. Our program's staff are certified mental health first aid trainers for youths and adults. Each year, our health trainings prepare nearly 1,000 attendees to identify and support mental health crises. Youth & Opportunity United (Y..O.U.) AmeriCorps members deliver high-quality afterschool and summer learning programs in 9 elementary and middle/junior high schools in Evanston and Skokie Illinois. AmeriCorps members are responsible for providing youth with tutoring and enrichment activities that promote their academic, social, and emotional skills.

Residents will be released gradually, under their mentor teacher’s tutelage, and then serve as full-time classroom teachers-of-record in the second year, harnessing the foundation they built in year one. Public Allies Chicago’s leadership understands that Chicago is rooted and grounded in community and is recruiting Allies from communities that may have been overlooked. Illinois JusticeCorps is an innovative AmeriCorps program that places volunteers in courthouses around Illinois to help people without lawyers navigate the civil justice system. Volunteers are trained and supported to provide legal information and procedural guidance, as well as connect self-represented litigants with legal aid services and self-help resources. The program provides a unique opportunity to gain exposure to the court system, build professional skills, and give back to the community. We offer compassionate, immediate, and individual social and academic support.

We advocate, develop, and provide world class education to high school dropouts in collaboration with the alternative high school community. Using a harm-reduction approach, we provide Substance Use Counseling and DUI services to individuals looking to reduce their alcohol and drug use. GuideStar worked with BoardSource, the national leaderin nonprofit board leadership and governance, to create this section. Our Public Health AmeriCorps members act as health educators, counselors, and system navigators, helping participants manage their health and increasing community knowledge of healthy behaviors. Our Problem Gambling Services program is committed to raising awareness about problem gambling and finding support that addresses each participant's individual needs.

The Association House High School (formerly El Cuarto Año HS) offers a new path for students who have been left behind by traditional public schools, and an opportunity to earn a high school diploma. Sinai Chicago is a network of 4 hospitals, 17 community clinics, 1 community institute, and 1 nationally recognized research institute all serving communities on Chicago's West and Southwest sides.
Since 1899, Association House has worked with Chicagoans who seek tools to lead more productive lives. It is one of the oldest settlement houses in Chicago originally designed to provide relief and guidance to new immigrants. Today, Association House is a vital resource to under-served, multicultural communities, providing collaborative programs in English and Spanish. We promote health and wellness, educational advancement, and economic empowerment. The Child Welfare team provides support and care for vulnerable children and families. As the largest fully-bilingual child welfare team in Chicago, Association House serves many Latinx families.
We work in partnership with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Our goal is to ensure the safety, well-being, and healthy development of children. We help parents and families develop nurturing and safe relationships with their children. Our one-on-one case management teams partner with individual participants to determine both their immediate needs and long-term goals. Many of our participants have a predominant economic, mental health, or educational need and/or aspiration. Through our process, we find that fully 20% of our participant community actively utilizes services in multiple areas.
At that time, our participants were mostly central European - and in need of education, training, and social services to help them adapt to life in a new country. We provided services that the city and State did not, and offered programs to improve our community's access and opportunity for participation in Chicago. Changing over the years, our participant community is still diverse - for many decades now mostly Latinx and African American - and demonstrate critical economic, health, and educational needs. Our Behavioral Health programs offer an array of culturally competent and evidence-based behavioral healthcare, prevention, treatment, and educational programs delivered by a team of qualified professionals.
We commit to empowering students through relevant antiracist education. We will work to develop the essential tools each student will use to transform their lives and realize their endless potential. Integrated health provides free, bilingual primary health and psychiatric care for low-income, under- and uninsured individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities, or co-occurring disorders. Dulcinea is a structured living setting for adults with severe mental illness or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. We provide a safe and welcoming environment to foster confidence and independence in our participants.
AHHS’ team of certified teachers, mentors, and support personnel, tailor their services to each student’s academic and social needs. We offer a data-driven curriculum that teaches the core learning standards with additional academic supports to ensure students are well-equipped for success. Gardeneers sustains school garden programs, focusing on Chicago's south and west sides. Our team of garden educators goes to our partner schools at least once per week, where we lead hands-on lessons on nutrition, community, and nature.
Our Healthy Lifestyles Program (HLP) educates youths, their parents, and members of the greater West Side communities that we serve on health and nutrition. We make factual health and nutrition information accessible to encourage long-term, independent healthy decision making through health, nutrition and cooking classes, and physical fitness activities. We also host an annual Back 2 School Fair in August for hundreds of children and families. We are certified to teach evidence-based Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) trainings. Our Allies are diverse, equity-centered, innovative problem solvers, dedicated to mobilizing community assets to develop solutions to local challenges.
