From the quaint parlor to the opulent master bedroom, each room offers a glimpse into the past, allowing visitors to experience history in a tangible way.

Another Whaley daughter, Corrine, was engaged to be married at the time of Violet’s death, but her fiance broke off the marriage due to the scandal that the suicide caused the family. After such tragic events, Thomas built the family a new home not far from the Whaley house, leaving their original home vacant for nearly two decades. Although no one has lived in the house since 1953, the spirits of the dead are still there – waiting for visitors. Workers on site and guests who’ve toured the house tell accounts of many unusual and spooky encounters. Some say they’ve seen a figure looking out the upstairs window long after the house has closed for the day.

You’ll also get to learn a bit about the unique lives of Thomas Whaley, his wife Anna, and their children Violet and Thomas Whaley Jr., aka Little Tommy Whaley. Visiting the Whaley House is just one way to learn about San Diego’s history while you’re in Old Town. The museum includes information from when the building was a courthouse, from 1869 to 1871. Volunteer docents in period costumes are quick to point out rooms that are said to be haunted by Whaley family members who died in the home and others who were hanged on site. What’s most unusual about the home is the numerous reports of hauntings by docents; visitors; and, yes, Regis Philbin.

The bulk of the celebration follows on Thursday Oct. 5, the day of Whaley’s birth, which will be proclaimed Thomas Whaley Day in the city and county of San Diego. The events surrounding the Whaley House are indeed sad and heartbreaking. One has to wonder if Thomas having the home built on top of a cemetery and execution site is to blame for the tragedies that seemed to follow the family all of their collective lives. This is believed by many to be the lingering ghost of Jim Robinson mentioned earlier. He would torment the living by leaving footprints, stomping on the floor, and making chilling noises throughout the abode.
